Q1: How can we see the legendary herds wild ponies?

Go pony watching with the Assateague Explorer Cruise & Kayaking. Visit remote places along Assateague Island where the ponies live. Visitors discover creeks, coves & remote areas where herds of wild horses live along Assateague.

Q2: Is there a beach on Chincoteague?

No, but Assateague's beach is only a 10 -15 min. drive.

Q3: What are things to do on Chincoteague?

Chincoteague offers things for everyone. Boat cruise & kayaking, gift shops, museums, movie theater, ice cream parlors, miniature golf, go-kart, biking, memorial park (tennis courts, basketball courts, play grounds, skateboard ramps). Pony rides for children, pottery painting, trolley rides, boating, fishing, crabbing and more. Assateague Beach and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge offer many kinds of outdoor recreation (swimming, beachcombing, hiking, biking, clamming, fishing, bird watching, etc.). The Carnival is held in July. Several festivals are available throughout the year (click here for more information).

Q4: When is the Pony Swim?

The annual Pony Swim is held on the last Wednesday and Thursday in July. Ponies swim across a channel from Assateague to Chincoteague during slack tide between 7am and 1pm.

Q5: When is the best time to visit Chincoteague?

More activities are available in Summer. Most of the hotels, stores, restaurants and other businesses are open from May through October

Q6: Are mosquitoes bad in summer?

Mosquitoes are usually only bad during certain weeks. They are never bad at the beach or on boat cruises and they seem to go through phases. The Town of Chincoteague controls them by spraying. Most mosquitoes are present in the woods. Try to avoid bushy places and woods, and apply bug repellent if you are going to these places. Most come out before dark.

Q7: Can we bring our dogs?

Yes, Chincoteague has some hotels and cottages where you can stay with your pet. No dogs allowed in Memorial Park and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (not even in your vehicle).

Q8: Is there places to eat on the island?

Yes, there are many places to choose from - Seafood restaurants, sub shops, family dining, asian food, all-you-can-eat buffets and fine dining. Many restaurants serve breakfast. A lot of good seafood is here for sure. If you are not a seafood person, don't worry. You can also find, steaks, pasta, pizza, and other food as well.
